Perceptual Narrowing
Perceptual narrowing allocates attention to distinctions that repeatedly matter and lets unused distinctions blur. Apparent differences in taste may therefore record what a person’s environment trained them to notice.
A preference for loud colours may be judged as poor taste when the more revealing difference is perceptual: one environment taught certain distinctions to matter, while another rewarded an entirely different set.
E1Attention follows consequence
The brain has limited perceptual resources, so it learns which contrasts repeatedly carry consequences. Neurons are spent separating signals that matter; distinctions that rarely affect anything receive less attention and become harder to see. Over time, this training feels like direct perception—obvious quality rather than learned sensitivity. The result resembles Acquired Taste, but the change is not only in liking: it is in what you can discriminate at all.

Perceptual narrowing can explain why people notice different qualities; it cannot establish that every preference is environmentally trained or that every judgment of quality is mistaken. The mechanism describes selective attention, not a universal ranking of tastes.
E1Borrow another person’s distinctions
Choose one taste you usually dismiss and ask an experienced admirer to name three contrasts they use to judge it. Compare examples side by side using those contrasts before deciding whether the attraction is empty or whether your environment simply never trained you to see its structure.
