Kinetic Impact Planetary Defense
A small collision can redirect a dangerous asteroid if it occurs far enough upstream. The transferable model is **early leverage**: modest changes compound into large differences in where a moving system eventually arrives.
A spacecraft weighing just 500 kg was deliberately smashed into an asteroid roughly 150 metres across—and the asteroid’s deflection was measured afterward. Planetary defence, in this case, meant hitting something enormous with something comparatively tiny.

A kinetic impactor does not need to destroy an asteroid. The collision changes its motion; given enough time, that small alteration shifts where the asteroid will be later. The moving parts are therefore impulse, lead time, and accumulated separation. This is upstream leverage rather than a power-law claim: the advantage comes from acting early in a trajectory, not from assuming every small cause has an outsized effect. Unlike the emergency allocation of the fight-or-flight-response, the mechanism rewards advance detection over last-minute force.

A measured deflection
The spacecraft–asteroid collision turns the model into a testable intervention: apply a known impact, then measure whether the target’s path changed. The important result is deflection, not spectacle or destruction.
E1Deflection is not salvation
A measured change does not by itself show that every threatening asteroid can be diverted enough to miss Earth. The model depends on detecting the object early and producing sufficient trajectory change; without lead time, a small nudge may remain small. Nor should the cheap-versus-expensive asymmetry be generalized into an offense-defense-balance rule: this evidence demonstrates one collision and its measured deflection, not a universal advantage.
