Environmental impact belongs to a product’s whole life, not its appearance at the point of use. Production, transport, washing, repeated use, and disposal can reverse an intuitive verdict about which option is greener.

A cotton bag can require thousands of uses before it catches up environmentally with a plastic one. The material that feels virtuous at the checkout may begin its life with the larger footprint.

Move the boundary, change the verdict

The illusion comes from judging only the visible moment: carrying groceries in cotton, drinking from glass, throwing away plastic. Life-cycle assessment widens the accounting boundary. It adds the resources and energy consumed during manufacture, the weight moved during transport, the cost of washing, the number of actual reuses, and the product’s end of life. A reusable alternative starts with an environmental debt; each avoided disposable item repays part of it. That makes Reuse Threshold central: the promised benefit exists only if behavior carries the product past its break-even point.

Glass looks cleaner at the moment of drinking, but making, transporting, and repeatedly washing the bottle all add costs that the visual comparison with plastic hides.

The answer lives inside the assumptions

A life-cycle comparison is not a permanent label declaring one material good and another bad. Its result depends on what stages are counted and on real behavior—especially transport, washing, and how often an item is reused. Change those conditions and the ranking can change.

Calculate before you replace

Before buying a supposedly greener replacement, write down its production inputs, transport burden, washing needs, likely lifespan, and realistic number of uses. If you already own the reusable item, make passing its reuse threshold the goal—not acquiring another cleaner-looking substitute.
