A reusable product becomes environmentally better only after repeated use repays the extra impact of making it. Reusability is potential; crossing the reuse threshold is what produces the benefit.

A cotton bag can look like the obvious environmental choice and still need thousands of trips before matching the environmental profile of a plastic bag. Even paper may require dozens of uses.

The upfront debt of durability

Reusable products often require more material or more resource-intensive production so they can survive repeated use. That creates an upfront environmental debt. Each reuse spreads that initial cost across another avoided disposable item; only when the accumulated savings exceed the production premium does the reusable option pull ahead. The decisive variable is therefore not whether an object *can* be reused, but whether it *will be reused enough*. This is the break-even point inside Life-Cycle Assessment, and it explains why the Substitution Effect can reverse a seemingly green swap.

The cotton-bag paradox

Cotton’s natural image conceals a large starting burden: the bag must remain in circulation for thousands of uses to repay it. Buying another cotton tote before wearing out the first one resets the debt instead of delivering the promised saving.

A paper bag has a lower stated threshold than cotton, but “dozens of times” still demands a reuse habit that many short-lived bags may never survive.

A threshold is not a universal score

The evidence establishes that different bag materials have very different break-even reuse counts; it does not make every plastic bag preferable or supply one threshold for all products. The comparison depends on the particular alternatives and on whether the nominally reusable item actually completes enough uses.

Count uses before buying replacements

Choose one bag you already own, estimate its relevant reuse threshold, and keep a visible trip count on it. Do not buy a supposedly greener replacement while the current bag still works: your next environmental gain comes from another use, not another purchase.
