You are not a solitary organism but a host ecosystem: a distinctive community of microbial species whose composition and diversity help define how that ecosystem functions.

Inside one human gut live roughly 100 trillion bacteria belonging to about a thousand species. The community is distinctive enough to be described as a bacterial fingerprint—part of what makes one individual biologically different from another.

The individual is an ecosystem

The useful shift is one of scale. Treat the body not merely as human cells governed by one human genome, but as habitat occupied by many microbial populations. Each species brings its own functions, genes, and interactions; the resulting community has a composition and internal dynamics of its own. The microbiome lens therefore asks ecological questions—who is present, in what proportions, and with what diversity—rather than collapsing every bacterium into the category of germ. This is the foundation for understanding Dysbiosis: changing the community can matter even when the host’s genes remain the same.

A census is not a diagnosis

The striking numbers establish that the gut is a large, diverse microbial habitat; they do not, by themselves, show which species are beneficial, what a healthy balance must be, or whether a particular bacterial fingerprint causes a particular health outcome. The ecosystem model is a better starting point, not a ready-made clinical verdict.
