A microbial signalling network

The “gut-body-brain axis” reframes the gut as one node in a connected system. Microbes process what enters their environment and generate biochemical signals; the body responds through pathways linking digestion, metabolism, immunity, inflammation, and the brain. This means a microbial change need not remain local. Its downstream effects can appear as shifts in mood, sleep, or metabolic function—the same ecosystem change expressed through several bodily systems. Influence is not an oracle

The axis does not mean every mood, sleep problem, or “gut feeling” originates in microbes, nor that intuition becomes biologically correct because it feels visceral. It identifies a route of influence within a larger system; it does not establish a single cause for every downstream change.

Track the system, not just the symptom

When mood, sleep, digestion, or energy changes, log them together with recent shifts in diet, stress, exercise, antibiotics, and sleep. Look for repeated co-movement across the whole system before treating any one factor as the cause.
