Prisoner's Dilemma
Prisoner's Dilemma is the trap in which protection against expected betrayal makes mutual betrayal the rational choice. Cooperation produces the better shared outcome, but defection offers safety—or a tempting private gain—when you cannot trust the other side to cooperate.
Two prisoners can each serve one year by staying silent. Yet the offer of freedom for betraying the other pushes both to confess—and both serve two years instead. Each avoids being the trusting fool; together they choose the worse result.
E4When self-protection manufactures betrayal
The trap has three moving parts: mutual cooperation creates the highest shared benefit; unilateral defection rewards the betrayer and punishes the cooperator; and uncertainty makes each side protect itself. Once you expect the other person to defect, your safest response is to defect too. That response then confirms their suspicion and locks both sides into a stable but inferior outcome—the defect-defect loop. The problem is not simply selfishness. It is an incentive structure in which trust carries an immediate cost and betrayal appears individually rational, even while mutual betrayal leaves everyone worse off. Trust therefore depends partly on the game people are placed in, not only on their character.

Projection can turn a boss and employee into mutual defectors: each interprets the other through an expectation of bad faith, responds defensively, and supplies fresh evidence for the other's suspicion.

When each person takes the selfish payoff rather than bearing the cost of restraint, individual gains accumulate into collective loss. This extends the dilemma into a collective action problem.
E2Why carry your own rubbish?
Civic cooperation collapses when people reason that restraint is pointless because others will litter anyway. The anticipated defection of strangers becomes permission to defect yourself, producing the dirty environment everyone dislikes.
E3Not every conflict is this game
The model applies only when mutual cooperation really is better than mutual defection and each side can gain or protect itself by defecting. Some disputes involve incompatible interests, while others are coordination problems where people want the same outcome but lack a common signal. Calling every disagreement a Prisoner's Dilemma can hide the actual incentives.
E4Change the payoff before requesting trust
Tomorrow, identify one relationship stuck in mutual defensiveness and make a small cooperation offer whose cost is limited and whose response is observable: share one useful piece of information, define the reciprocal next step, and state what happens if it is not returned. You are testing whether the interaction can become an iterated game in which cooperation is rewarded, rather than asking either side to gamble everything on goodwill.
