Reframing the Question (Normalize Before Comparing)
Some comparisons look mysterious because their denominator is hidden. Normalize quantities against the relevant base—area, population, time, or opportunity—and an apparent gap may shrink into a measurement problem.
India is often framed as uniquely overpopulated beside China. But China has roughly three times India’s area; measured against land, the supposedly similar populations are not similar at all—India is about three times as populous per unit of area.

Raw totals silently treat unequal bases as equal. Put two national population figures side by side and the comparison seems natural, while the missing denominator—land area—changes what those figures mean. The reusable move is to identify the quantity that actually bears the load, then express each total per unit of it. Normalization does not merely refine the answer; it can reveal that you were explaining the wrong discrepancy.

E1A corrected ratio is not a complete cause
Population per unit of total territory is itself only a normalization. It can expose why the original comparison misleads, but it does not explain how much land is habitable, where people actually live, or why the population reached its present level.

Tomorrow, when two large numbers are used to establish a surprising gap, write each as “quantity per ___” before accepting the story. Test at least two plausible denominators and ask which one represents the real constraint.
