A category begins as a human-made simplification, but repeated use can make its boundary feel like a feature of reality. Once reified, the label organizes perception, policy, and behavior while concealing the continuum or diversity underneath.

Draw a boundary around Nigeria, and an extraordinarily varied territory starts to look like one self-evident unit. The line was created on a map; afterward, people reason as though the unity came first.

When the container becomes the contents

Categorization compresses complexity: a boundary gathers many different places, people, or cases under one name. That compression is useful, but repetition hides the act of construction. The label becomes familiar, institutions organize around it, and the resulting behavior makes the category appear even more natural. This is the map-territory-distinction with a feedback loop: the map does not merely describe the territory; once accepted, it helps govern it.

The error is not making a distinction. Thinking requires distinctions. Reification happens when you forget who drew the line, what variation it suppresses, and which decisions now depend on treating everything inside as equivalent.

The episode’s country-boundary example shows the sequence cleanly: a line is drawn, a unit is named, and the unit becomes the default object of thought. It also exposes the double edge of the map-territory-relation: simplification makes coordinated reasoning possible, while its omissions disappear from view.

The line can still be useful

A constructed category is not automatically false or disposable. Maps, jurisdictions, and other shared units can enable coordination. The model breaks when it becomes a reflexive argument against every classification; the real question is whether the boundary preserves the differences relevant to the decision. Categories may also drift through prevalence-induced-concept-change, so even a once-useful line can quietly change meaning.

Audit the boundary before using the label

Tomorrow, take one category driving a decision and write down three things: who or what defined its boundary, which unlike cases it groups together, and what would change if you split it into narrower units. This is especially important in markets, where category definition can turn an apparent surplus into a shortage—or the reverse.
