Projection Distortion
Turning a complex reality into a usable representation requires choices about what to preserve. Those choices produce systematic distortion: the representation becomes clearer for one purpose by becoming less faithful in another.
On a familiar world map, Greenland can look enormous—comparable to continents it does not remotely match in area. The apparent fact is an artifact: flattening a globe stretches the regions near the poles.

A curved surface cannot be laid onto a flat plane without changing some combination of area, shape, distance, or direction. A projection therefore encodes a choice: preserve the feature needed for the map’s job and accept damage elsewhere. That makes projection distortion a specific case of the map-territory-relation: simplification is what makes a representation useful, but also what makes it unsafe to treat as reality.
The distortion is systematic rather than accidental. Once you know the transformation rule, you can ask where it stretches, compresses, or hides the territory. This is why multiple models help: representations built around different priorities expose one another’s blind spots.
