Purpose-Built Abstraction
A useful model preserves the information required for a particular task and discards the rest. More fidelity can make a representation less usable, because detail has costs in size, clarity, and speed.
Imagine unfolding a navigation map drawn at one mile to one mile. It would cover the territory itself—and be useless for finding your way through it.

Every model selects. It keeps distinctions that matter for its intended job and suppresses those that do not. A road map preserves routes and junctions while abandoning the territory's full texture; that loss is what makes the map portable and legible. The lesson of the map-territory-relation is therefore stronger than “models are imperfect”: purposeful distortion is often necessary for usefulness.
The task determines which distortion is acceptable. Navigation, geology, and political administration require different maps of the same ground. Using multiple models helps expose those choices, while the detail-rigidity-trade-off explains their cost: retaining more detail can increase precision yet make the representation harder to handle and adapt.
E1What the map may not omit
Simplification is not automatically wisdom. It works only when the discarded information is irrelevant to the task. Change the task, and yesterday's elegant abstraction may become dangerously incomplete. Nor does the principle mean that less detail is always better: the one-to-one map fails because it preserves everything, but a map that removes a necessary road fails for the opposite reason.
E1Name the job before choosing the map
Tomorrow, take one model, dashboard, or plan you rely on and finish this sentence: “I use this to decide ___.” Then identify one detail it must preserve and one it can safely discard. If you cannot do that, redesign the representation around the decision instead of adding information indiscriminately; where execution is the task, implementation intentions show why selected specifics can be essential.
