Strong design often begins with comparison, not creation: study solutions the world has already tested, identify the function each serves, and recombine the best-fitting parts into a coherent system.

India’s Constitution was not conceived as a singularly Indian invention. Its makers drew parliamentary government from Britain, fundamental rights from the United States, directive principles from Ireland, and centre–state arrangements from Canada—after B.N. Rau travelled abroad gathering ideas.

Treat the world as a library of experiments

Designing from scratch discards evidence. Existing systems reveal possible components, the problems those components address, and at least some consequences of using them. Synthesis separates function from origin: a borrowed institution matters not because another country uses it, but because it performs a needed job.

The creative work then moves to selection and integration. You compare alternatives, understand why they work in their original settings, and assemble a combination suited to your own constraints. This is Innovation as Recombination at institutional scale: originality lies less in producing unprecedented parts than in making borrowed parts work together in a new whole.

The Indian framers surveyed several constitutional traditions rather than treating any single country as a complete template. Different sources supplied answers to different design problems, turning comparative study into a toolkit.

Borrowed parts do not bring borrowed conditions

A feature that works inside one country’s history, institutions, and power structure may behave differently elsewhere. Synthesis fails when it becomes imitation—copying visible forms without understanding their function, dependencies, or conflicts with the rest of the system.

Build a function-first comparison

Before designing your next system, name three jobs it must perform. For each job, find two existing solutions, write down the mechanism that makes each work, and choose only after testing that mechanism against your own constraints.
