Selection builds without seeing ahead

The crucial distinction is between how variations arise and how they persist. Mutation produces differences without aiming at a destination; selection repeatedly retains variants that work better in their present environment. Each surviving step becomes the starting point for another round. Over many rounds, this cumulative process can create structures that look purposeful even though no stage anticipated the result. The Watchmaker Analogy therefore identifies a real puzzle—intricate coordination—but not its only possible explanation.
