Sleep Deprivation as Intoxication

A person can be fully awake yet cognitively impaired: after severe sleep restriction, reaction time and working memory may fall into a range described as comparable to alcohol intoxication.

After a single night limited to four or five hours of sleep, your reaction time and working memory may resemble those of someone with a blood-alcohol level between 0.05 and 0.1. You may look sober, feel functional, and still be cognitively unfit for the task ahead.

Awake is not the same as unimpaired

Sleep loss removes cognitive capacity without necessarily removing consciousness. The result is a dangerous mismatch: you remain able to act, but the systems needed to hold information in mind and respond quickly are degraded. That makes intoxication a useful safety model rather than a metaphor for feeling tired.

The mismatch becomes harder to detect when your sense of performance diverges from your actual performance. Instead of asking only whether you can stay awake, treat daytime function as the relevant test.

The four-hour night

The same short night can damage two different parts of performance: slower reactions make time-sensitive responses less reliable, while weaker working memory makes it harder to retain and manipulate information. The impairment therefore matters beyond obvious drowsiness.

A comparison, not a breathalyser

The cited evidence describes one severe, single-night restriction and compares selected cognitive effects with a blood-alcohol range. It does not establish that every tired person is impaired identically, or that hours alone reveal the whole condition: sleep quality and individual functioning still matter.

Apply a sober-task rule

After a four-to-five-hour night, postpone driving, hazardous work, or irreversible decisions when you can; when you cannot, add an alert second person or an independent check. Record whether you woke refreshed and stayed alert rather than trusting mere wakefulness—and use signals such as unusually short sleep-latency to investigate recurring sleep debt.
