Sleep adequacy is a functional state, not a universal number of hours: sufficient sleep leaves you refreshed on waking, alert through the day, emotionally stable, and normally recovered from physical activity.

You can miss someone else’s prescribed sleep target and still be getting enough—or hit it precisely and fail the test. The revealing evidence is what happens after you wake: whether you stay alert, hold a stable mood, and recover without excessive soreness.

Measure the restoration, not the clock

Sleep is adequate when it restores several systems well enough for the next waking cycle. The four-part test samples distinct outputs: waking refreshed reflects immediate recovery; sustained alertness tests daytime vigilance; stable mood tests emotional regulation; and ordinary soreness after activity tests physical recovery. No single hour target can directly establish all four. Duration is an input, while these outcomes are the functional result—an important distinction captured by Sleep Quality Over Sleep Quantity.

Where it shows up

The four-signal check

A person who wakes refreshed, remains alert without dozing, maintains a stable mood, and does not become unusually sore after physical activity passes the functional test. The strength of the test comes from the signals agreeing, not from treating any one good morning as decisive.

A screen is not a diagnosis

Failing one of the four checks does not prove that insufficient sleep caused it; mood, alertness, and soreness can have other causes. Conversely, the test is strongest as a repeated pattern rather than a verdict based on one unusually good or bad day.

Run a seven-morning audit

For one week, record four yes-or-no answers each day: refreshed on waking, alert without dozing, stable mood, and normal physical recovery. If one signal repeatedly fails, adjust your sleep opportunity or timing and watch whether that specific outcome changes instead of chasing an abstract hour target.
