The fastest way to get more taxis into an overwhelmed area may be to make every available taxi more expensive. The higher fare sends some riders away—and pulls idle drivers in.

One price, two movements

A surge acts on both sides of the market. Among riders, the higher price filters out trips that can be delayed, shared, or abandoned; how many disappear depends on Price Elasticity of Demand. Among drivers, the same increase turns a busy area into a more attractive destination, prompting idle supply to move toward it. Price is therefore both a rationing device and a recruitment signal: demand contracts as supply expands.

When requests spike in one area, higher fares cause some riders to drop out while encouraging idle drivers elsewhere to relocate. Instead of hiding scarcity behind “no cars available,” the platform exposes it in the price and gives suppliers a reason to respond.

Clearing the market is not the same as treating everyone fairly

Surge pricing allocates scarce rides partly by willingness and ability to pay. That can improve availability without making the outcome equitable: an urgent rider with little money may lose out to a less urgent rider who can comfortably absorb the increase. The mechanism explains how scarcity is coordinated, not whether the resulting allocation is just.

Inspect the shortage before condemning the price

The next time a fare surges, compare the alternatives explicitly: decide whether you can delay or substitute the trip, then ask how rides would otherwise be allocated at the fixed price—through refusals, long waits, or simple unavailability. Judge the surge against that real counterfactual, not against an imaginary world with cheap rides for everyone.
