Scarcity

mechanism

Scarcity protects an asset’s purchasing power only when no actor can rapidly expand its supply. If new units can flood the market, existing holdings are diluted.

Cowrie shells once functioned as money—until Europeans imported them by the billion. The shells had not changed, but their purchasing power collapsed because someone had found a way to manufacture abundance.

The hidden variable is the supply tap

A store of value depends on a constraint: new supply must enter slowly relative to the stock people already hold. Otherwise, whoever controls the supply tap can create more units, dilute every existing unit, and break the expectation on which value preservation rests. Gold’s advantage in this comparison is not shininess or tradition; it is that extraction is physically limited and mining can increase the stock only at a bounded rate.

Where it shows up

Cowries meet mass importation

Cowries appeared scarce within the markets using them, but that scarcity was local. European access to enormous external supplies exposed the missing constraint and destroyed their monetary value.

E1

Gold’s geological throttle

Gold can also be produced, but only through mining at a limited rate. That slow expansion makes dilution harder and helps explain why it can preserve value where a suddenly abundant currency cannot.

E1

Hard to produce is not enough

Scarcity can protect established value; it cannot create demand by itself. Something may be genuinely rare and still unwanted. Nor should physical scarcity be confused with the Scarcity Heuristic, where the appearance of limited availability merely increases urgency.

Find the supply tap

Before treating anything as a store of value, name every actor who can increase its supply and estimate how quickly they could do it. If one discovery, policy decision, or production channel could flood the market, price that dilution risk into your decision.

When Europeans imported billions of cowrie shells, their value fell; gold is different because it exists in limited quantity and can only be mined at a certain rate.
