Time-critical logistics creates outsized value when bypassing a slow route changes the outcome, not merely the delivery time. The decisive metric is the marginal value of each minute saved.

In Swedish cardiac emergencies, drones carrying defibrillators beat ambulances in 67% of the reported cases—by only about three minutes. Three minutes sounds trivial until the cargo is an AED and the destination is a person whose survival depends on speed.

When minutes change the outcome

Ordinary logistics optimizes cost, volume, and reliability. Time-critical logistics starts with a different question: does delay sharply increase the chance of failure? If it does, a vehicle that bypasses roads, terrain, or traffic can turn travel time into clinical or operational value. Zipline compressed some deliveries from days to 30 minutes—not by carrying more, but by removing the slowest constraints from the route. This is opportunity cost measured in outcomes: the relevant cost of delay may be a lost treatment window, not a late parcel. It also differs from manufactured urgency because the deadline comes from the situation itself.

Speed is not automatically value

The model applies only where minutes or hours materially alter the result. Evidence that drones excel for urgent medical cargo does not establish that they are best for routine, bulky, or delay-tolerant deliveries. Nor does bypassing congestion eliminate the need for ambulances or ground networks; it changes which component should arrive first.

Map the deadline before the route

For one critical delivery process, list what happens after 10 minutes, one hour, and one day of delay. If the failure probability jumps at a particular threshold, separate the small, outcome-changing item from the rest of the shipment and design an independent fast channel for it. Do not begin by asking whether drones are exciting; ask which constraint must be bypassed before the deadline.
