Technologies arrive as bundles, not verdicts: the same tool can impose serious harms while making essential goods cheaper and safer. Sound judgment compares both sides without letting either cancel the other.

The material clogging oceans and entering bodies as microplastics also helps make medicine safer, food cheaper, transport lighter, and housing more affordable. Plastic is not one consequence but a bundle of conflicting ones.

Judge the bundle, not the label

Trade-off thinking separates a technology from its individual effects. Plastic's low cost and adaptable physical properties spread benefits through several systems, while its persistence creates pollution elsewhere. Calling it simply “good” hides the damage; calling it simply “bad” discards what its useful functions make possible. The reusable model is to identify each major gain and harm, then compare their scale rather than allowing the most vivid consequence to decide the verdict.
