Base rate neglect occurs when you mistake the people around you for the population you belong to. A selective peer group hides the denominator, making statistically extreme outcomes feel ordinary.

A household earning Rs 90,000 a month is already in India’s top 1%—yet many people guessed that the threshold was Rs 2.5–5 lakh. An outcome rarer than ninety-nine out of every hundred households had come to feel merely normal.

Your neighbourhood replaces the denominator

To judge where you stand, you need two things: your own outcome and the distribution of outcomes across the relevant population. Base rate neglect drops the second part. Your mind substitutes an accessible sample—colleagues, friends, neighbours, or people visible online—for millions of households it rarely encounters. Because that sample is selected by profession, location, education, and social access, its middle can sit near the population’s extreme. Sampling Bias shapes who you see; base rate neglect is the error of treating that view as the underlying distribution. Relative Deprivation can then make an objectively rare position feel modest because comparison stays local.

The mistaken income guesses reveal more than poor numerical intuition. They show how an affluent reference group can shift the imagined baseline upward: people estimate the national threshold from the incomes available in their own social field, while most Indian households remain outside that field.

The population must match the question

A national base rate is not automatically the right comparison for every decision. Housing, hiring, and living costs may depend on a city, industry, or household type. The correction is not to worship the largest denominator, but to name the relevant population explicitly—and resist quietly replacing it with your peer group.

Write down the denominator first

Before calling an income, risk, or achievement average, write: “average among whom?” Then find one population-level percentile or frequency and compare it with your immediate circle’s estimate. The gap tells you how much your environment has distorted the baseline.
