Bidirectional Causality
Some relationships carry causal force in both directions: each variable can intensify the other, creating a feedback loop that one-way explanations miss.
Drug use may worsen mental health problems—but mental health problems may also drive drug use. The apparent cause can simultaneously be an effect, turning a straight causal arrow into a cycle.

Bidirectional causality begins with two distinct pathways. One variable changes the other; the changed second variable then feeds back into the first. Repetition can make both conditions more severe, so a snapshot of their correlation conceals the sequence that produced it. This differs from Reverse Causality, where the arrow merely points the opposite way: here, both arrows may operate.

Drug use can contribute to mental health problems, while those problems can in turn encourage further drug use. Treating either side as the sole origin misses the cyclic relationship.
E1Not every correlation is a feedback loop
Two variables moving together does not establish causation in either direction. A Confounding Variable may produce both, or the relationship may be spurious. Bidirectionality is a hypothesis that requires evidence for two separate causal pathways—not a license to draw arrows both ways whenever direction is unclear.
Test both arrows separately
When someone claims “X causes Y,” write down the proposed chain from X to Y, then construct the strongest plausible chain from Y to X. Look for timing, interventions, or a Natural Experiment that could distinguish the two pathways and reveal whether both remain active.
