Confounding Variables
A correlation can point at the wrong cause when a third variable produces both the apparent cause and the outcome. Stronger empirical work separates plausible alternatives and tests which causal channel survives.
Two schools can sit equally close to a highway yet face different pollution exposure: one is downwind, the other upwind. That directional difference turns an ordinary proximity comparison into a sharper test of what is actually harming students.

Highway proximity bundles several possible causes together. Nearby schools may experience more pollution, but also more noise and whatever differences accompany their location. A confounder can therefore make one bundled feature appear responsible for an outcome produced by another. Comparing equally distant schools while varying wind direction holds distance—and much of the noise explanation—steadier while changing expected pollution exposure. That does not magically prove causation, but it moves the evidence beyond correlation by isolating one proposed causal channel.

Upwind versus downwind schools
The useful comparison is not simply “near highway” versus “far away.” It is between schools with similar highway distance but different exposure because the wind carries emissions toward one and away from the other. The setting behaves like a limited natural experiment: geography supplies a comparison that helps distinguish pollution from noise or distance.

The wind comparison addresses particular alternatives; it does not establish that the schools are identical in every relevant respect. Other differences could still track their locations, and neither this design nor a plausible mechanism alone eliminates every competing causal story. The model strengthens a claim by narrowing alternatives, not by granting certainty.
