Traditional intelligence optimizes moves within a fixed situation. Boundary intelligence acts one level earlier: it evaluates the situation itself—its participants, incentives, information quality, and fit with your abilities—before you commit. That choice determines which opportunities and hazards your inside-the-game skill must handle. Boundary intelligence does not make operating skill irrelevant. Choosing a favorable arena cannot compensate indefinitely for poor judgment inside it, and rejecting every uncertain setting can become avoidance disguised as discernment. The model separates two capabilities; it does not permit either one to replace the other.

Before your next substantial commitment, write down two alternatives to the arena you are about to enter. Compare their incentives, information quality, participants, and fit with your Circle of Competence. Decide whether your next unit of effort should improve your play—or move you to a better table.
