Circle of Competence means knowing which judgments your experience actually supports—and which it does not—then enlarging that territory through small adjacent experiments rather than unsupported confidence.

Warren Buffett’s advantage was not simply picking good stocks. It was refusing to invest when he could not understand the business well enough to judge it—a decision to win partly by declining bets.

Competence needs an edge

Ability alone is insufficient because every ability has a boundary. Inside it, you possess enough relevant experience to distinguish a strong opportunity from a persuasive story. Outside it, confidence can remain high even though your judgment has lost its footing. The crucial skill is therefore not being good at everything, but accurately locating the edge of what you can evaluate. This also makes competence domain-specific: strength in one arena does not automatically transfer to another, as Skill Specificity warns.

The boss you cannot control

A productivity theory becomes useful only after separating the conditions you can change from the boss you cannot. Here the competence boundary meets the Circle of Control: diagnose your actual room to act before prescribing a solution.

A boundary is not a barricade

The model breaks when “outside my circle” becomes a respectable excuse for permanent avoidance. The circle’s size may matter less than knowing its boundary, but growth still requires crossing that boundary carefully; the alternative is expertise that remains accurate and increasingly narrow.

Make one adjacent bet

Before tomorrow’s consequential decision, write down what you can judge from direct experience, what you are merely assuming, and the first unfamiliar variable beyond the boundary. Test that single variable with a small, reversible step before committing the full stake.
