Flavor is assembled across the senses: what you see, smell, feel, and hear can alter the experience produced by the same food or drink.
A chip can seem fresher because of how it sounds. In the same episode, lighting shifted ratings of chocolate mousse and color changed the flavor people perceived in a drink—the tongue was only one contributor to the verdict.
E1The brain builds flavor from several signals
Eating does not deliver a sealed taste signal that vision and sound merely decorate. The brain combines inputs from the tongue with color, aroma, temperature, and sound, then produces a single experience called flavor. Smell entering from the mouth can supply an apparent fruit identity even when the food itself is tasteless, while temperature can change the conditions under which flavor is experienced. Because these signals are integrated before you make your judgment, a cue outside the mouth can change what seems to be happening inside it.

Four routes into one judgment
Color redirected perceived drink flavor; ambient light changed mousse ratings; smell made tasteless jelly seem like strawberry or apple; and sound altered perceived chip freshness. These are not four unrelated tricks. They reveal several sensory channels converging on the same judgment, much as the appearance of variety can change the experience of otherwise similar food.
E1Influence is not total control
The examples establish that other senses can shift flavor judgments, not that every cue overrides the food itself or affects every person identically. What you notice may also depend on learned attention—perceptual-narrowing can make practiced distinctions vivid and unused ones blur—so crossmodal influence should not be treated as a universal recipe with guaranteed effects.
E1Change one channel, keep the food fixed
Run a two-condition tasting tomorrow: serve the same snack or drink twice, but alter one cue—container color, lighting, aroma, or accompanying sound—without revealing that the food is identical. Record flavor, intensity, and freshness ratings before comparing them. You will be testing which channel helps construct your judgment, rather than assuming your tongue delivered it alone.
