Innate potential may set a developmental ceiling, but early conditions determine how closely a person approaches it. Genes describe a possible range; nutrition and environmental exposure help decide what becomes real.

A child can be born with the potential for a high IQ and still never reach it—not because the potential disappeared, but because iodine, iron, protein, or a sufficiently clean environment did.

A ceiling is not a destination

Potential is an upper constraint, not an automatic outcome. Development must construct the capacities that heredity makes possible, and that construction requires material inputs while the brain is forming. Nutrient shortages can withhold necessary building blocks; pollution can interfere with development. The result is an asymmetry: favorable conditions may let you grow toward your limit, while adverse conditions can stop you below it. This is why Polygenic Inheritance and environment are not competing explanations—one helps shape the range, while the other affects how much of it is expressed.

A preventable shortfall

Iodine, protein, and iron deficiencies illustrate the mechanism directly: an inherited capacity can remain unrealized when development lacks essential inputs. Pollution adds the other side of the equation—not merely missing resources, but exposure to something that can obstruct the path toward the ceiling.

Do not mistake the ceiling for a forecast

The model does not show that every difference in IQ comes from nutrition or pollution, nor that improving conditions can raise ability without limit. It distinguishes potential from attainment: removing developmental barriers may recover otherwise lost ground, but it does not prove that all ceilings are equal or endlessly movable.

When making decisions for pregnancy or childhood, treat adequate iodine, iron, protein, and reduced pollution exposure as capacity-preserving infrastructure—not optional attempts to manufacture intelligence. The concrete goal is to remove preventable constraints before they become an irreversible developmental shortfall.
