Regression to the Mean
Extreme outcomes usually depend on an unusually favorable combination of many causes. Successors may inherit some advantages, but they are unlikely to reproduce the entire combination, so outcomes tend to move back toward the ordinary range.
Einstein had descendants. Yet three or four generations later, none of them was another Einstein. An exception that spectacular did not become a family setting.
E1The exception is a combination, not a copy
An extreme result rarely has one transferable cause. It sits at the far end of many contributions lining up: inherited traits, development, circumstances, opportunities, and chance. The next generation receives a fresh mixture rather than a duplicate of that alignment. Polygenic Inheritance captures the genetic part of this mechanism: complex traits are assembled from many contributions, and only part of each parent's combination is passed on. As the rare ingredients reshuffle, the exceptional outcome becomes less likely and the result drifts toward the population's usual range.
E1Ordinary is not inevitable
Regression is a tendency, not a force dragging everyone to mediocrity. Exceptional parents or predecessors can still shift the odds through inherited advantages, resources, teaching, or environment. The mistake is expecting those advantages to reproduce the full exception reliably—or treating a less extreme successor as evidence that something went wrong.
Budget for reversion
When planning from an extraordinary result—a prodigy, a record year, or a spectacular performance—list the contributing conditions and mark which ones will actually persist. Build your forecast from the repeatable subset, not from the peak itself.
