Genetic Hitchhiking
A harmful gene can persist when it travels with useful genes: selection acts on the inherited package, preserving it when the package’s benefit exceeds its cost.

Natural Selection can only discriminate among the genetic packages that are actually inherited. When a harmful variant remains linked to a beneficial one, the lineage carrying both may reproduce more successfully than competing lineages. The useful variant pays the harmful variant’s fare: the package wins overall, so both persist. Genetic Recombination matters because reshuffling can eventually separate passenger from driver, allowing selection to retain the benefit without necessarily retaining its cost.
