Outcrossing can bring complementary traits from distinct lineages into one offspring, creating combinations neither parent carries alone. The advantage lies in combining differences, not merely mixing for its own sake.
A rose that survives pests may fail in drought; a drought-tolerant rose may remain vulnerable to pests. Cross them, and some offspring may carry both defenses.
