A family tree records who your biological ancestors were; your genome records only the fragments that survived repeated, random inheritance. As generations pass, genuine ancestors can leave no DNA in a particular descendant.

Ram could be your biological ancestor even if you inherited none of his genes. The family connection remains real; what may have vanished is its detectable genetic trace.

The family tree expands; DNA gets sampled

Each generation creates another inheritance event: genetic material is passed forward through a limited, chance-dependent sample rather than as a complete ancestral archive. A genealogical link therefore persists once it exists, while a particular ancestor’s genetic contribution can be lost along one line of descent. After enough repetitions, the probability of receiving anything from a given ancestor falls sharply; the episode notes that by seven generations there is only a 50% chance that one of those ancestors passed genes down to you. This is why ancestry spreads through family lines more reliably than any one ancestor’s DNA survives in one person.

The apparent contradiction disappears when you ask two different questions: “Is Ram in the chain of biological descent?” and “Did any of Ram’s genetic material survive every sampling step into me?” The first can be yes while the second is no.

Absence of DNA is not absence of descent

This distinction does not show that a claimed ancestor is genuine; it only shows why failing to inherit or detect that person’s DNA cannot, by itself, erase a real genealogical relationship. Conversely, a place in the family tree does not guarantee a measurable genetic contribution.

Split every ancestry claim in two

The next time a family story or ancestry result names an ancestor, write down two separate claims: the genealogical claim about descent and the genetic claim about surviving DNA. Evaluate each with the evidence appropriate to it instead of treating one as proof of the other.
