Ancestor slots double every generation, but distinct ancestors cannot. Once the theoretical tree outgrows the population that existed, the same people must appear repeatedly across its branches.

Go back just 33 generations and your family tree appears to demand more than eight billion ancestors—more people than were alive in the world at the time. The arithmetic is sound; the picture of the tree is wrong.

When slots outnumber people

Each generation doubles the number of positions in a simple pedigree: two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents. That is Exponential Growth, so the number of slots soon escapes intuition. But those slots are not guaranteed to contain different people. As branches reconnect through shared ancestry, one person occupies several positions. The pedigree therefore folds inward: theoretical slots keep doubling while the count of distinct ancestors grows much more slowly.

A counting proof, not an identity claim

Stress-test the perfect tree

When you encounter a claim based on doubling ancestry, calculate 2^n for the stated number of generations and compare it with the population then available. If the slots exceed the people, replace the branching-tree picture with a network containing repeated nodes.
