Exponential Growth
In a doubling process, each generation enlarges the base for the next one, so totals escape linear intuition after surprisingly few steps.
Your family tree begins innocently: two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents. But keep applying that same tiny rule—double once per generation—and the number of ancestor slots soon becomes astronomically large.

Exponential growth is not merely steady addition happening quickly. Each round acts on everything produced by the previous round: two becomes four, four becomes eight, and eight becomes sixteen. The step stays the same—multiply by two—but the absolute increase grows each time. That widening base is why intuition, which tends to picture equal additions, falls behind.

The expanding pedigree
Moving backward through a family tree makes the mechanism visible: every person occupies two parental slots in the preceding generation. After ten generations, the perfect doubling model yields 1,024 slots in that generation alone—not because the rule changed, but because it kept operating on an ever-larger count.

The doubling describes positions in a theoretical family tree, not an unlimited supply of distinct ancestors. Real pedigrees contain repeated people as branches reconnect, producing pedigree collapse. Exponential projection is therefore powerful for exposing the pressure created by repeated multiplication, but it can become false when physical or historical constraints prevent the underlying population from doubling.
Write out the doublings
When something doubles repeatedly, calculate at least ten rounds instead of estimating by feel. Then name what could stop the multiplication—such as a finite population—and distinguish the theoretical count from what can exist in reality.
