Complex traits need not arrive fully formed. Selection can preserve each intermediate stage when it already performs a simpler useful function, allowing complexity to accumulate step by step.

Before an eye could form an image, a mere patch of light-sensitive tissue could still warn an organism that a shadow had fallen across it. The unfinished eye was not a defective camera; it was already a working alarm.

Selection rewards present utility, not future purpose

Evolution does not have to preserve a useless structure while waiting for its final function. Variation produces a modest capability; if that capability improves survival or reproduction now, selection can retain it. Later changes then modify something that already works.

The function can become progressively richer: a light-sensitive patch distinguishes light from dark, while a cup-shaped depression adds information about the direction of the light. Neither stage needs to anticipate sharp vision. This is how Cumulative Selection crosses what otherwise looks like an impossible gap: every step pays for itself before the destination exists.

Where it shows up

From shadow alarm to directional sensor

A flat light-sensitive patch can detect a passing shadow. Curving that patch into a cup still does not produce a clear image, but it reveals where light or danger is coming from. The intermediate structure survives by doing a simpler job well enough.

Possible is not the same as inevitable

Intermediate functionality answers the objection that a complex trait must appear in one miraculous leap; it does not prove that every imagined sequence will evolve. Each proposed stage must be biologically reachable and useful in its own conditions. If an intermediate carries costs greater than its immediate benefit, selection has no reason to preserve it.

Test the alleged missing step

When someone claims that a complex feature could not have developed gradually, write down the simplest earlier version and ask what smaller job it could perform immediately. Then repeat for the next increment. If each stage has a present-tense benefit, the demand for a fully formed first version disappears.
