Infrasound can trigger dread and visual disturbance before you consciously detect a sound. Lacking an obvious physical cause, the mind may explain those sensations using an available belief—turning vibration into a ghost.

The ghost in one laboratory was a fan. Its 19 Hz vibration produced dread and visual effects convincing enough to be mistaken for an apparition.

The body reacts before the story arrives

A low-frequency wave can affect the body and visual system without presenting itself as an ordinary, identifiable sound. That splits the experience into two stages: first an unexplained sensation—unease, distortion, a sensed presence—then an interpretation. Because the actual source remains hidden, the mind reaches for a cause that fits the setting and its existing beliefs. This is Environmental Attribution Error: the sensation is real, but its assigned cause is wrong.

A laboratory fan generated the low-frequency wave. Once the machinery was identified, the apparently supernatural experience had a physical mechanism: vibration first, ghost story second.

A mechanism is not a universal verdict

One fan-induced episode does not establish that every report of dread, visual distortion, or haunting is caused by infrasound. The model is strongest when a repeatable low-frequency source is actually found; without that evidence, it remains a hypothesis rather than an all-purpose dismissal.

Switch the room, not the story

If unease or visual disturbance reliably appears in one place, test the environment before interpreting the experience: identify fans or other vibrating machinery, compare what happens when they are running and stopped, and see whether the sensation tracks the physical source.
