Open systems become reliable through overlapping correction layers, not flawless prevention. Each layer detects, reverses, or contains failures that another layer misses.

Anyone can vandalize Wikipedia, yet the damage is usually repaired within minutes—often before more than a handful of readers see it.

Reliability after the breach

Wikipedia does not rely on a single perfect gatekeeper. Bots flag or undo suspicious edits; recent-changes patrol exposes fresh activity to human review; watchlists recruit people who know particular pages; protected pages add stricter controls where ordinary openness becomes too risky. These layers differ in speed, judgment, attention, and authority, so one layer can catch what another misses.

The reusable principle is correction latency: a bad input need not become a lasting failure if it is detected and reversed quickly. Independence matters too. Several nominal safeguards add little if they all share the same blind spot; layered defense works when the layers notice different signals and can escalate stubborn cases.

Bots provide speed, patrol supplies broad human attention, watchlists concentrate subject-specific scrutiny, and page protection raises the barrier when repeated correction is not enough. Reliability emerges from their overlap rather than from any one layer.

Fast repair is not the same as truth

The evidence here concerns visible vandalism and how quickly it is repaired. It does not show that every subtle error, disputed interpretation, or unnoticed omission will trigger the same defenses. Layered correction is strongest when a failure leaves signals the layers are equipped to notice.

Design the second and third catch

Choose one system you maintain and trace what happens after a bad input gets through. Add two distinct catches—for example, an automatic alert followed by review from someone close to the affected area—and define the condition that escalates the issue to a stricter control.
