Blocking productivity technology may preserve particular jobs briefly, but it risks making the blocking economy poorer relative to adopters. The technology can diffuse elsewhere, shifting advantage rather than stopping change.

Imagine the Luddites succeeding completely: the machines stop—and England forfeits the automation that helped make it economically dominant. Saving the existing job structure could have meant losing the larger contest.

You can block adoption, not the advantage

Productivity technology changes how much can be produced with the same effort. If one group suppresses it while others adopt it, the adopters gain an advantage that makes resistance increasingly costly. The attempted job shield becomes a competitive handicap.

That pressure also makes prohibition unstable: economic incentives can bend resistance, while scarcity can trigger new routes to the same productivity gain. The reusable model is therefore comparative, not merely local: refusing a technology matters less than whether competitors refuse it too.

The episode’s Luddite counterfactual makes the trade-off stark. Preventing automation might have protected incumbent work, but at the cost of the productivity associated with England’s economic rise.

National gains are not worker guarantees

The fallacy does not prove that every technology is beneficial, nor that displaced workers automatically share in aggregate gains. A reskilling-bottleneck can concentrate the losses on people who cannot move into new roles, and some innovations become a progress-trap whose delayed costs surface only after adoption. The model challenges blanket obstruction; it does not excuse careless deployment.

Replace the ban with an adaptation map

For one technology affecting your work, list the task it makes cheaper, who can already adopt it, and the skill required to work alongside it. Put your effort into that specific skill or transition path—the part most vulnerable to adaptive-lag—instead of betting that adoption can be stopped.
