Standardization can increase efficiency while quietly coupling every part of a system to the same failure. Diversity limits the blast radius because different parts remain vulnerable to different shocks.

A planned forest can look like order perfected: the same tree everywhere. But that uniformity can give one pest—or the right storm—the ability to destroy the entire forest.

Efficiency creates a shared point of failure

Standardization removes variation, making a system easier to plan and manage. It also aligns vulnerabilities: when every part has similar traits, the same threat can succeed everywhere at once. Diversity is therefore more than variety; it is a form of compartmentalization. Different weaknesses prevent one shock from propagating through the whole system.

Uniformity is not automatically brittle

The danger is not standardization by itself, but standardization against a shared threat capable of exploiting it. Uniformity may still deliver real efficiencies; resilience requires weighing those gains against the size of the resulting common failure domain.

Map the common failure domain

Tomorrow, choose one system you depend on and list which parts would fail under the same shock. Where the answer is “all of them,” introduce one genuinely different fallback rather than another copy of the dominant option.
