Operational Definition
An operational definition converts an abstract category into a repeatable observation by specifying exactly what measurable event counts. A lunar day, for example, is defined by a 12-degree change in the sun–moon angle rather than a fixed duration on a clock.
A lunar “day” need not last 24 hours. In the Hindu calendar, a tithi ends only when the angle between the sun and moon has shifted by 12 degrees.

“Lunar day” is an idea; a 12-degree angular shift is an observable threshold. The operational definition connects them by naming the quantity to track, the amount of change that counts, and the boundary at which one unit becomes the next. This makes the category reproducible: different observers applying the same rule can identify a tithi without relying on the human clock. It also illustrates Measurement by Proxy: the geometry of the sun and moon provides a measurable stand-in for the moon’s changing phase.

Instead of assuming that every calendrical day is a fixed block of time, the tithi follows the phenomenon itself: it is the interval required for the sun–moon angle to advance by 12 degrees. The unit is therefore anchored to a specified change, not a familiar label.
E1Precision does not guarantee usefulness
An operational definition settles how to classify observations; it does not prove that the chosen threshold captures everything you care about. A clean 12-degree boundary makes lunar phases countable, but the resulting unit need not align neatly with an ordinary clock day. The definition is a map with a purpose, and its convenience depends on the task.

Take one vague category you use in a real decision—“engaged,” “healthy,” or “urgent”—and rewrite it as a rule containing three parts: the observable quantity, the measurement procedure, and the threshold that changes the classification. Then ask whether two people following that rule would reach the same result.
