Makar Sankranti is associated with a yearly transition, yet it does not stay fixed to one familiar civil-calendar date. The puzzle appears only because several calendars are being treated as though they divide time in the same way.

One year, two clocks

The moon supplies a repeating rhythm for months; the sun supplies the rhythm of the year. A lunisolar calendar tries to preserve both rather than choosing only one. Because those cycles do not divide neatly into each other, the system needs rules that periodically reconcile them. The resulting dates can look inconsistent from outside, but the variation is the coordination mechanism doing its job—a specific case of the discretization trade-off.

Confusion about Makar Sankranti comes from comparing an observance situated within a coordinated solar-and-lunar system against dates produced by another calendar. The mismatch is not, by itself, evidence that either calendar is defective; each is organizing the year around different reference points.

Irregularity is not automatically coordination

This model explains date movement only when it actually results from reconciling lunar and solar reckonings. It should not become a catch-all explanation for every historical shift, regional convention, or disagreement about a festival date; those require their own evidence.

Name the clock before comparing dates

When a festival appears to move, first identify whether its rule is lunar, solar, or lunisolar. Then compare the underlying astronomical or calendrical event—not merely the printed date in a solar calendar.
