Variable Rate Processes
Variable rate processes make clock time an outcome rather than the measure. If a unit is defined by physical progress, its duration expands or contracts as the underlying motion changes speed.
A tithi is treated as a unit of the Hindu calendar, yet it is not a fixed 24-hour day: one can last about 19 hours and another nearly 27.

A tithi tracks a change in the Moon’s position, not a fixed quantity of elapsed time. Because the Moon travels in an elliptical orbit, it moves faster when nearer Earth and slower when farther away. The required positional change is constant, but the time needed to complete it is not.
That reverses the usual relationship between progress and time. In clock-based units, duration is fixed and the amount of change varies. In a variable rate process, the target change is fixed and duration absorbs the variation. Confusion arises when this motion-based unit is treated as though it belongs to the same reference frame as a civil day—a specific case of Reference Frame Mismatch.

The roughly eight-hour spread between short and long tithis is not an error in the calendar. It is the calendar faithfully recording an orbit whose speed changes along its path.

Variable length follows only when a unit is tied to progress through a process whose rate changes. A clock-defined interval remains fixed, and an irregular schedule may have entirely different causes. Before applying the model, identify what defines completion: elapsed time or a physical state change.
Ask what the unit holds constant
When two systems assign different durations to what looks like the same “day” or phase, write down each system’s stopping rule. If one waits for a specified angular or state change, compare progress rather than hours; treat the resulting clock time as the output.
