Sidereal vs Tropical Year
A sidereal year returns Earth to the same position against the stars; a tropical year returns the seasons. [[axial-precession|Axial Precession]] slowly separates those reference frames, so a stellar calendar can remain internally accurate while drifting against solstices and equinoxes.
Makar Sankranti once coincided with the December solstice. It no longer does—not because the festival lost its astronomical anchor, but because its stellar anchor and the seasonal turning point have slowly moved apart.

“A year” is incomplete until you specify the finish line. The sidereal year ends when Earth returns to the same position relative to the background stars; the tropical year ends when the seasonal cycle returns, as marked by solstices and equinoxes. Earth’s axis slowly precesses, shifting the seasonal markers relative to the stellar background. The result is a reference-frame mismatch: a date can stay faithful to one astronomical frame while appearing to drift in the other.

The festival tracks the sun’s entry into Makar, while the December solstice tracks the sun’s southernmost seasonal point. Once coincident, these events now occur at different times because precession moved the solstice earlier relative to the zodiacal entry.
E1Drift is not automatically error
The distinction does not prove that either calendar is wrong. A sidereal system succeeds if its purpose is to preserve a stellar or zodiacal alignment; it fails only if we silently expect it also to preserve a seasonal alignment. The real trade-off is choosing which reference frame must remain fixed.
E1Name the anchor before judging the date
When a festival or calendar date appears to move, identify its finish line: background stars, a solstice or equinox, a lunar phase, or a civil date. Then test drift against that intended anchor—not against a different cycle that happens to share the word “year.”
