Preferential attachment turns existing popularity into a recruiting advantage: when each new connection is more likely to go where connections already are, a few nodes pull progressively ahead. The resulting [[power-law-distribution|power law distribution]] needs no conspiracy—only growth biased toward current size.

A person can attract the next follower partly because they already attracted the previous thousand. Popularity is not merely the result of selection; it changes the odds of being selected again.

Every connection tilts the next choice

Newcomers do not distribute themselves evenly. Their likelihood of connecting to someone rises with that person’s existing follower or friendship count. Each successful connection therefore enlarges the target and, at the same time, improves its chance of winning another connection. Repeated across many arrivals, that feedback compounds small differences into the concentrated outcomes associated with Rich Get Richer dynamics.

In a social network, the highly connected person is more likely to receive each incoming connection. Their current audience becomes an advantage in acquiring the next member, pushing the network away from equal-sized followings.

The bias must actually exist

Preferential attachment does not explain concentration merely because concentration is visible. It applies when new connections are allocated in proportion to existing connectedness; if current popularity does not influence whom newcomers join, this particular feedback loop is absent.

Measure the attachment rule

When one account or node dominates, compare its share of existing connections with its share of newly arriving connections. If the two rise together, treat accumulated connectedness as part of the growth mechanism—not just as yesterday’s result.
