Social capacity is partly a cognitive capacity: maintaining a larger group requires tracking more people and the relationships among them. Across species, larger brains are associated with larger social groups.

A graph of brain size could predict something that seems far removed from anatomy: the size of an animal’s social group. When Robin Dunbar compared the two, group size rose with brain size.

Relationships consume cognitive capacity

A social group is not merely a headcount. Each additional member brings an identity, a history, alliances, obligations, and changing relationships that must be modelled. As groups grow, the number of possible ties grows even faster, increasing the cognitive work required to navigate them. The Social Brain Hypothesis proposes that larger brains expand this modelling capacity, making larger groups manageable. Dunbar's Number applies that broader mechanism to the apparent limits of human relationship networks.

Correlation is not the whole causal story

Dunbar’s plot establishes an association between brain size and group size; by itself, it does not prove that larger brains caused larger groups. Nor does it show that neural capacity is the only constraint: the supplied evidence does not isolate ecological pressures, social structure, or the tools groups use to coordinate.
