Voicing is an on/off switch layered onto consonant formation: hold the mouth’s configuration roughly constant, and vocal-cord vibration can turn a voiceless consonant into its voiced partner.

Aspiration is a separate switch in consonant production: keep the mouth position and voicing constant, and an added burst of air can produce a different sound.

A writing system becomes a phonetic feature matrix when each sound’s coordinates encode how to produce it: rows track where airflow is constricted, while columns track features such as voicing and aspiration. It is genuinely periodic because position carries a pronunciation rule rather than merely organizing labels.

A consonant depends not just on where the tongue is positioned, but on how that position controls airflow. At the same place of articulation, changing the degree of obstruction can move a sound from an approximant toward friction or complete closure.

Consonants form a physical map: their families depend partly on where the mouth obstructs the airstream. Shift that contact point from the back of the mouth toward the teeth and lips, and a sequence of apparently separate sounds becomes an ordered system.

A vowel is an articulatory position with the airflow left unobstructed. Remove the closure that produces a consonant while retaining roughly the same mouth position, and the apparent divide between consonants and vowels becomes part of one physical system.

A written word does not carry one universal pronunciation. Each language interprets shared spelling through its own sound inventory and pronunciation rules.
