Phonetic Feature Matrix (Periodic Table of Sounds)
A writing system becomes a phonetic feature matrix when each sound’s coordinates encode how to produce it: rows track where airflow is constricted, while columns track features such as voicing and aspiration. It is genuinely periodic because position carries a pronunciation rule rather than merely organizing labels.
Calling an alphabet a “periodic table” sounds like the usual abuse of a scientific metaphor. Yet this case earns the name: the letters form a matrix whose layout contains information about how each sound is made.

The matrix separates pronunciation into independent variables. One axis follows where the mouth obstructs the airstream; the other changes features such as aspiration and vocal-cord vibration. Moving through the grid therefore changes one articulatory feature at a time while holding others relatively stable. A letter is not just an arbitrary name for a sound: its neighborhood reveals its relationship to other sounds.

The comparison fails when symbols are merely arranged into tidy rows and columns. The layout deserves to be called periodic only if movement along each axis corresponds to a consistent change in pronunciation; visual order without a generative rule is just a chart.

When learning an unfamiliar sound in such a script, locate it in the matrix and compare it with the symbols immediately beside it. Identify which coordinate preserves the mouth position and which changes voicing or aspiration, then produce the new sound by changing only that feature.
