Consonants form a physical map: their families depend partly on where the mouth obstructs the airstream. Shift that contact point from the back of the mouth toward the teeth and lips, and a sequence of apparently separate sounds becomes an ordered system.

A string of different consonants can hide a single bodily movement: as you pronounce them, the tongue travels progressively from the back of the mouth until it nearly touches the teeth.

The mouth is the map

Speech begins with moving air, and consonants arise when the vocal tract blocks or constrains it. Place of articulation identifies where that intervention happens. Sounds made with the tongue in the same region belong to a physical family; move the point of contact forward, and you move into another family. This turns consonant classification from an arbitrary list into a spatial sequence you can feel. Place, however, is only one coordinate: Manner of Articulation describes what kind of obstruction occurs at that location.

Pronouncing the demonstrated sequence reveals the organizing principle directly: the tongue positions do not jump randomly around the mouth but advance from the rear toward the teeth.

Location does not fully specify a consonant

Two sounds can share a contact point and still differ. Place of articulation maps where the air is shaped; it does not by itself capture how the obstruction works, whether the vocal cords vibrate, or whether an extra burst of air follows.

Replace listening with touch

Take a consonant sequence you are learning and pronounce it slowly. Ignore the letter names; track where your tongue or lips interrupt the air, then group the sounds by shared contact point and order those groups from the back of the mouth to the front.
