Energy systems cannot maximize sustainability, availability, and affordability at the same time. The useful question is not how to escape the triangle, but which compromise a system is making—and who bears it.

The impossible demand is also the ordinary one: energy should be clean, continuously available, and cheap. The Energy Trilemma says you cannot fully have all three.

Three goals, one necessary sacrifice

Each objective constrains the other two. Prioritizing low cost and constant supply can weaken sustainability; prioritizing sustainability can instead impose higher costs or limits on availability. This is an hard constraint to navigate, not a promise that better engineering alone can erase every trade-off. The mechanism becomes visible when you ask which corner is being protected and which one is quietly yielding.

The trilemma identifies tension, not an eternal price or technology mix. Improvements such as reaching energy-breakeven may shift what is feasible, but the supplied material does not establish when—or whether—any technology eliminates the three-way constraint.

For the next energy proposal you assess, make a three-column table: sustainable, available, affordable. Record the proposal’s evidence for each, then explicitly mark the corner it compromises instead of accepting claims that all three are maximized.
