Random assignment is powerful because it reduces confounding, but causal clarity does not justify deliberately exposing people to foreseeable harm. When the assignment itself would be unethical, the question requires an observational or natural-experiment design.

To test whether pollution harms cognition, you might imagine assigning pregnant women to cleaner and dirtier neighborhoods. That would make the comparison tidier—and the study "unethical, illegal, immoral." The experiment becomes clearer precisely by doing something no responsible researcher should do.

When causal control becomes moral responsibility

A randomized-controlled-trial tries to make treatment the clearest systematic difference between comparable groups. randomization helps distribute hidden differences that might otherwise confuse cause with selection. But the same deliberate assignment that gives RCTs their inferential strength also makes researchers responsible for the exposure they impose. If that exposure is already suspected to cause serious harm, stronger control over the experiment means greater responsibility for creating the danger—not permission to proceed.

Pollution during pregnancy

The pollution question exposes the boundary cleanly: researchers may study people who encounter different pollution levels, but they cannot knowingly place pregnant women in polluted areas merely to obtain a better comparison.

Not every imperfect experiment is forbidden

This principle does not say that random assignment is inherently unethical, or that observational evidence is always preferable. The boundary appears when the study would knowingly assign a harmful exposure. Outside that boundary, the stronger protection against confounding may make an RCT the better design.

Test the assignment before the hypothesis

Before proposing an experiment, write down exactly what each participant would be assigned. If one arm requires knowingly imposing the suspected harm, stop treating an RCT as the default and look for naturally occurring exposure differences or observational comparisons instead.
