Once a skill becomes comfortable, practice preserves fluency but stops producing much adaptation. Growth resumes when you raise the difficulty to the next attainable level.

Getting good at practice can make that practice stop working. The exercise that built your skill becomes a way of rehearsing what you already know.

Move the edge of competence

Early on, a task demands attention because its component skills are not yet reliable. Repetition makes those skills comfortable; errors decline, execution becomes easier, and the same task asks less of you. That ease is evidence of mastery, not continued growth. Progressive overload restores the learning demand by moving you to the next level of skill. The useful increase is not arbitrary suffering: it is a new challenge that exceeds your present ability while remaining close enough to practise deliberately—the territory described by the Zone of Proximal Development.

Difficulty alone is not progress

Raising the challenge too far can replace learning with repeated failure, while raising it before the current level is stable can leave foundational weaknesses intact. The model calls for the next level, not the hardest available task.

Promote one practice variable

Choose a skill you can now perform comfortably and increase one measurable demand tomorrow: speed, precision, complexity, range, or independence. Keep the other conditions stable so you can tell whether the new level is producing adaptation rather than noise.
