Tacit knowledge is institutional intelligence acquired through participation: unwritten rules, practical judgment, and cultural cues that guide action even when their holder cannot explain why.

You can learn how an organization really works without anyone teaching you. Its official procedures may be written down, yet the rules that determine what gets noticed, forgiven, or quietly rejected arrive through osmosis.

When the lesson survives but the explanation disappears

Repeated exposure turns observed reactions, exceptions, and social cues into expectations. You stop calculating each move and begin to sense what will work here. The mind preserves the usable judgment while discarding much of the path by which it was learned—like a compiled program whose source code has been lost. That compression makes expertise fast, but difficult to inspect or transmit. It is why experience can produce judgment that an instruction manual cannot.

The organization behind the org chart

A newcomer learns not only stated processes but the unwritten rules governing how work actually moves. Participation supplies the missing layer: which conventions matter, where discretion lives, and how the institution behaves in practice.

Competence without an account

A practiced mind may reach a sound response before it can reconstruct the reasons. The knowledge remains operational even after its explanatory trail has been compressed away.

Fluency is not self-justification

Because tacit knowledge can work without revealing its source code, a strong intuition is not automatically a correct one. The same opacity that makes judgment quick also makes inherited habits hard to audit, explain, or distinguish from obsolete convention.

Shadow the exceptions

When entering a new organization, accompany an experienced person through one real decision and ask them to flag every moment when the written process is not enough. Record the cue they noticed and the adjustment they made; those deviations are where the unwritten system becomes visible.
